THE HUMBLE BEGINNING OF SIN SIANG HAI

Sin Siang Hai, a brand rooted in history and a brand loved by the locals. The founder Sim Chin Yaw was born as a citizen of Kuching in the year 1927. Before the establishment of SSH, Sim Chin Yaw underwent years of training and apprenticeship from a Shanghai carpenter who moved to Kuching. He then gained his carpentry skills by working from day to night in the Shanghai carpenter’s small carpentry factory. 

At the age of 18, Sim Chin Yaw then came to Miri and worked as a carpenter for his uncle who was a furniture manufacturer. With his talent and dedication, he rose quickly as one of the top carpenters in Miri. In 1950, Sin Siang Hai was then established by 23- year old Sim Chin Yaw with the aim of becoming the largest furniture manufacturer in Miri.

THE RISE OF SIN SIANG HAI

After the founding of SSH, Sim Chin Yaw launched his specially designed wedding bed sheet sets, cabinets and men-made sofas. Their line of products were very popular in the market and with its excellent reputation for producing high quality products at an affordable pricing, SSH became the most famous furniture stores in Miri.  

With the booming economy due to the demand of oil and gas, numbers of technicians flooded into Miri, which led to the establishment of Miri’s first hotel (Park Hotel) in 1968. At that time, SSH was its only furniture contractor. In the same year, Sim bought a piece of land at Krokop 10 Miri, which is where the SSH showroom is located today.

As its popularity continued to increase, SSH became the designated partner of major hotels and developers. The success gained had inspired Sim to expand his business into other categories.

In 1981, SSH entered the land development industry and started their developer journey with the construction of 3 bungalows and 8 semi-detached houses. Sim’s son also followed his father’s footsteps and went to Singapore to learn interior designing. After completing his studies, he went back to Miri and worked as the interior designer for SSH. SSH has developed from a small private furniture factory to a well-known company with around 100 employees today.
